Born in Shanghai in 1969, Song Tao studied at the National University of Art and Design (now the Tsinghua University School of Arts and Design) where he majored in Graphic Design and Drawing. He gained his master’s degree in Plastic Arts at the Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University in 1993. Returning to China, he founded the Tao Gallery in 1994, which held many exhibitions of the work of outstanding Chinese contemporary artists. Later, he established the Song Tao Design Studio, which offered interior, furniture and exhibition design services.
In 2002, Song established the Self-made Company, his own exclusive brand agency, to promote the work of talented domestic artists and designers, and to realise his vision of bringing together traditional and contemporary forms of Chinese design. To help revive traditional Chinese handicrafts, he also set up the Say Fine Art gallery in the famous 798 Art Zone in Beijing during 2007. One year later, he established the Brand League of Chinese artists, who create works using wooden and metal materials, thereby helping people to rediscover the vitality of China’s amazing traditional plastic arts. |
